Warning signs of a romance scam
Very strong affection very early, often before you have spoken properly. Reasons never to meet or to take a video call: a posting abroad, a hospital, a broken camera. A push to move to another app, email or messaging service straight away. A sudden emergency that only money can solve - a flight, a fee, a customs charge, a medical bill. Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, bank transfers or help moving money for someone else. Stories that shift when you ask a plain question, or photographs that never quite match.
Protect your information
Keep your full name, address, workplace and daily routine off your profile. Never share bank details, card numbers, passwords or copies of documents. Never send money or gift cards to someone you have not met, whatever the reason. Keep conversation on the site until you are confident; there is no rush.
Meeting for the first time
Meet in a public place, in daylight if you can, and keep the first meeting short. Arrange your own transport there and back. Tell a friend or relative where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be home. Keep your phone charged, and leave if anything feels wrong. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
Travelling to meet someone
Be especially careful about travelling a long distance, and particularly abroad, to meet someone you have not met before. Do not let anyone else arrange or pay for your travel, and do not hand over your documents.
Block and Report
You can block a member from their profile: they cannot contact you or find you in search, and they are removed from your browse results. You can also report a profile or a message.
